The stone idol of Goddess Mahankali has four sculpted hands, each of which is holding a sword, damaru, spear, and amrut cup. She is draped in a layer of silver with Vendi Kavacham, seated in Padmasana. Goddess Manikyaladevi, another Hindu divinity, also resides in Mahankali.

For the Mahankali Ammari Jathra celebration in July and August, the temple is lit by electricity and festooned with garlands, buntings, and festoons. It is an annual celebration that honours the peace, harmony, and security that Goddess Mahankali has present upon her people. Every day, thousands of devotees do poojas, abhisheks, and serve prasadam to the Goddess.

Bonalu means on ‘food’ and women in large numbers offer food to Mahankali. Bonalu Jatara is a month long affair and includes colorful processions and community feasts.

The offerings are brought in pots and delivered to the Goddesses at the temples. They include cooked rice, jaggery, curd, water (known as Bonam), and other foods. Offerings are thought to fend against diseases and misfortunes during the monsoon.

A well-built guy named Potharaju is among the thousands of participants in the colourful Bonalu parade, which also features persons portraying various scenarios from the Puranas, particularly those related to the Goddess Kali mythology.

Rangam is the next ritual after Kolupu Potharaju Bali, where an unmarried woman kneels before the idol of Goddess Mahankali while perched on a pot. When the Goddess returns, she responds by describing all the wonderful things that will happen. Many people travel to see this tradition's spiritual awakening.
